Many of our new members have little or no experience in the mountains. To safely take people out into a potentially dangerous environment requires certain training in navigation, route planning, first aid, emergency rope techniques and group management, as well as general experience. As a consequence all of our leaders have to undertake Mountain Leader (ML) training before they can lead a walk/scramble for the club. ML training (and then assessment, not required by us) is a nationally recognised award that will allow (if the assessment is passed) you to lead groups for schools and activity centres across the country (in summer conditions, no snow or ice).

We attempt to teach basic navigation, route planning and rope techniques throughout the year so that members can become competent by the end of the year. If you wish to lead for the club then we can organise a 5 day course at a training centre with half of the cost being paid by the university. This is a great chance to work towards additional qualifications to help you future.

Please contact the exec if you are interested.
